I had a childhood friend, whose family had a tradition of giving each other books at Easter time. Because they all shared a love for reading, a tell-tale rectangular shaped present and just one or two brightly coloured eggs, gradually came to replace a basket full of chocolates. Easter also meant holiday time, which meant everyone had time to enjoy their ‘easter egg read’. I found out later that giving books as a present to children is an Icelandic tradition, and happens on Christmas Eve.
While reading and giving books isn’t for everyone, many families are rethinking traditional gift giving and coming up with their own Easter gift ideas for kids. Dietary and health concerns also play a part, with some parents unhappy about the extent of chocolate and sweets that children consume.
With many people looking for Easter gift ideas for kids and babies that aren’t chocolate, I thought I’d do Easter Baby-Blanks style and suggest some alternative gift ideas for kids and babies, as well as great places to find them.
There are so many beautiful alternative easter gift ideas for kids. Rather than visiting the big department stores and shopping centres, I love discovering home grown Aussie designers online and at local makers markets. It’s a much more relaxing and fun way to shop – and I have to admit, I’m a bit of a makers market junkie!
When I was a kid a new pair of red shoes held some sort of special magic. A great alternative Easter present are shoes in your child’s favourite colour. When they’re well made, they can be passed down to younger kids.
One of my favourite designers online for kids is Li’l Aussie Shoe Company. Sharryn makes and sells the most beautiful handmade leather shoes for babies, all the way up to bigger kids. They’re well made and are ideal for growing feet, because they have nice roomy toe boxes.
Easter time marks a transition to cooler weather and is a perfect time to think about dressing kids and babies in some warmer layers. Sleeveless hoodies are the perfect between seasons layer and look super cool as well. They work well worn over a short or long sleeve Tee and stop chilly morning temperatures from getting in.
Kids enjoy dressing in new clothes when the seasons change. As the weather starts to get cool, a cosy new crew neck jumper with super soft French terry cotton is a great gift to keep them warm. French terry is thick and soft on the inside keeping kids warm. Unlike, polyester, the more you wash cotton, the softer and cosier it becomes.
As you know Baby Blanks is based in Melbourne. I’ve got some favourite markets I love to explore when I have time. I buy most of my presents at these markets and they’re great for discovering interesting, and beautifully made gift ideas for kids and babies.
Belgrave Big Dreams Market: This is my favourite local market and just keeps getting better and better. Located in beautiful Belgrave.
Swagger Child: This is an awesome market for everything kids and babies, with lots of really talented designers selling fantastic kids and babies items. The market is moving to a pop up model, which means it could be coming to your local area soon.
Heide Makers’ Market: Located in the gardens next to Heide Museum of Modern Art.
Rose Street Market: Rose Street market is on every Saturday and Sunday, so you don’t have to kick yourself if you missed out last weekend.
My lovely customers come from all over Australia. I love to know about great markets to visit in other states, so please share your best Australian makers markets in the comments below. The more we support each other, the stronger we all become. Happy Easter everyone!
